He spends his days exploring modern day Paris and becoming acquainted with various characters that live there such as clock makers, cat burglars, and fashion designers. It was released in 2011 and received critical acclaim for its visual effects and story telling techniques. The movie begins with a shot of an orphan boy named Hugo living a life of solitude, as he is raised by a clock maker named Georges.  Georges moves his workbench into the middle of the room, where he begins to build a timepiece.  To create the timepiece, Georges uses springs from his own body, pulling them through tubes attached to his temples, causing the chamber to fill with his breath.  After several hours of struggling against these forces, Georges collapses from exhaustion and Hugo carries on alone with the task.  As Hugo struggles to complete the timepiece, he is pulled underground by an unseen force.  He emerges in a large metal dockyard where he meets a bewildered man named Papa.  Papa explains to Hugo that despite living in the modern world and having all of its technological advances, they are still just miniature people living within a massive machine.  Hugo's entire world is then pulled down into the ocean and floats into a vast oceanic trench where he meets his father, who teaches him how to swim and brings him along on an adventure of exploration. Hugo and his father explore the trench using a variety of boats and devices, traveling through it to a series of seaside cabins where Hugo meets a cast of eccentric characters as he begins to learn about the world as seen from the ocean.  In one cabin, Hugo encounters a woman named Cecile, whose husband is an inventor who keeps laboratory animals as pets.  He also explores his father's house, which contains a time machine that takes him back to the first century A.D., where he witnesses a murder occur.  He rescues a young girl who is being sold at a slave market and runs away with her, but is chased back to the present by a group of angry men.  Hugo and his father escape on a pair of hot air balloons and fly back to the modern day, where they receive admittance from Hugo's uncle.  In the final scene, Hugo gives his father a watch that he has been working on throughout the film. "Hugo" was directed by Martin Scorsese and written by John Logan with additional writing from Graham Moore.
