Chak De India is a 2015 Indian sports drama film directed by Kabir Khan and co-produced by Salman Khan and Ritesh Sidhwani. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Om Puri, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Anushka Sharma in lead roles. The story focuses on an under-performing Indian men's field hockey team during the 1958 Asian Games where it plays to win the gold medal for their country. It was released worldwide on 2 October 2015. The film received mixed reviews from critics and was declared a commercial success at the box office with lifetime collections totaling ₹1 billion (US$14 million). In the early part of the 20th century, India was a British colony. In those days, India had a dormant but passionate hockey team. Due to the important role that it played in maintaining the status quo of British colonial rule and suppressing the nationalist movement, this team was given preferential treatment and facilities. However, its performance resulted in poor results for which an anonymous ball boy nicknamed "Nawaab" (a local ruler) was blamed by his under-performing teammates and coaches. The people started calling him Nawaab because of losing such games. In 1949, India won its first international hockey world cup championship against Pakistan after defeating Pakistan 5–3 in front of their home crowd. However, for a reason unknown to the team and their fans, the team failed to win a single medal at the forthcoming Olympics. As a result of this, the players were ostracised by their own countrymen and were mocked as losers. In 1955, India played against Pakistan again at the Asian Games. This time around it reached quarterfinal stage after defeating Burma 5–0 in front of an electrifying crowd. However, due to political reasons Nawaab was not allowed to play along with his men. In 1957, Nawaab was finally allowed to play along with his team after the Government took a risk on him. In the first round, India lost to Australia by a margin of 3–0 and as a result, India finished 2nd in their group and therefore they were eliminated from further competition. Nevertheless, Nawaab went back home with honour and the gesture was appreciated by the nation. This is when things changed for Nawaab and his men. After this win, Nawaab and his team started earning more and more exposure and popularity amongst Indians. The 'loser' tag was now gone. In 1959, Nawaab led the team to 1961 World Cup finals in Netherlands. After defeating Pakistan 2–1 in the first round, India went on to beat Germany 7–2. This resulted in India finishing atop of their group and thus qualifying for the semi-finals for the very first time. Beating Japan 4–0 in the next round, they then came up against West Germany who were at that time one of the best hockey teams in Europe, coached by an Englishman named John Griffiths. cfa1e77820
